As the European Light Lunar Lander (ELLLa) concept came from the Lunar Resources Registry (LRR), the first planned missions are for exploring resources on the surface of the Moon.

LRR has already determined about 50 unique locations on the Moon that should be explored for resources. Some of these are listed below.

LRR also monitors existing Lunar exploration companies such as Intuitive Machines and iSpace, plus space agencies from China and India, to determine where their landers are going and why.

There is a resources race to the Moon, driven by a search for rare earth elements, platinum group metals, and what can be discovered that has immense value.

NASA and ESA, meanwhile are focussing on exploring the South Pole for water, trapping in the regolith in polar-shadowed craters.
